The Top 77 Songs Of 1962
Music surveys were a big part of classic AM radio in the 60's, 70's & 80's. Radio stations would feature weekly Top 40 countdown shows where they would play songs in order from the bottom to the top for the listeners. American Top 40 with Casey Kasem (1970-1988) was a nationally syndicated countdown show. Local radio stations would have their own music surveys that usually were compiled using record sales and airplay as a measure of popularity. Artists would always monitor the weekly surveys to see how well they were doing with radio airplay and sales.
PopRadio 77 has used the WABC Musicradio 77 Year End Surveys from 1963-1981 as its official Super Hits Surveys. For all other years it has chosen to use the Billboard Charts as the source of its Super Hits Surveys. Billboard has been in the forefront of music charts of all types since 1936. Methods of evaluating song popularity has changed, especially since the dawn of the digital age, but Billboard remains the most revered source of song popularity in the US.
